About the Breed
Bernese Mountain Dogs are classified into the Working Group by the AKC. Originating from Switzerland, Berners earned their keep working on the farm helping with a variety of tasks such as herding cattle, guarding livestock and farms from predators, and companionship. They are also well known for their strength and ability to transport goods from village to village as draft dogs. Did you know that Bernese Mountain Dogs can pull up to 10x their own weight?!
While these dogs can be a workhorse on a farm, most people appreciate their Bernese for its remarkably sweet, silly, sensitive, and loving temperament. Their lovable nature and devoted personality combined with their grand size and striking beauty make them a stand out at the Farmer's Market, Dog Park, or on a neighborhood walk.
Personality
Bernese thrive on human companionship. From playing to protecting - Bernese live for their family.
With an instinct to be a watchdog, they will bark to announce the arrival of visitors, but they will also quickly settle down, especially when given attention, emphasizing their adaptability and amiable nature. One of our customers told a story to us about one evening where she got nervous while she was walking her dog at dusk. An unfamiliar guy started walking her direction. Her dog immediately went on high alert and moved from walking at her side to walking in between her and the sketchy guy. He stayed like this until they were in her apartment. Even after the door was locked, he stood guard to ensure his owner's safety.
These gentle giants love kids. While they can be full of energy and geared up for long walks and bike rides, they are also down for a lazy afternoon watching movies or being patient while the kids use them as a jungle gym.
Grooming
Well known for their long, silky black, rust and white coat - Bernese require regular brushing, but minimal trips to the groomer. Shedding occurs year-round, intensifying during seasonal changes. Brushing once a week is generally sufficient, with more attention needed during spring and fall to keep their coat neat and minimize fur on surfaces.
Bernese Mountain Dogs, with their attractive appearance, gentle disposition, and adaptability to family life, make them a beloved and well-rounded breed!
Size
Males: 80-120 lbs, 25-27.5 inches
Females: 75-100 lbs, 23-26 inches
Diet
Dogs have a wide range of nutritional requirements (protein, fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, etc). Feeding a high quality complete and balanced diet is reliable and convenient choice to meet the daily nutritional requirements that are easily digestible for your companion.
As a large breed dog, it takes longer to reach full physical and mental maturity. Because Bernese Mountain Dogs are large breed dogs, it is important to make sure that they are on a diet formulated specifically for large breed puppies until they are approximately 18-24 months old before transitioning to an adult diet that is formulated for large breeds. Your veterinarian will be a great resource in determining when to transition based on your puppy's specific needs.
